Construction workers used a huge crane to carefully place large concrete beams for the roof over the swimming pool section of the Clearfield YMCA's new addition yesterday afternoon. The concrete beams are 64 feet long, 12 feet wide, and weigh approximately 34 tons or 68,000 pounds each. The work closed East Locust Street between Second and Third streets for much of the afternoon. Workers installed 10 concrete beams, which were manufactured in Chambersburg. Five were delivered to Clearfield on Monday and were stored overnight at the driving park and five were delivered yesterday. (Photo by Jeff Corcino)
Founded in 1902, the Clearfield YMCA was first located downtown on the Mossop Building's
second floor. Today that building houses the Ritz Theatre.
In 1904, the YMCA purchased the residence of John F. Weaver, its current downtown site.
In 1921 the swimming pool was added and the gymnasium was remodeled. In 1959 a fire
destroyed the front half of the YMCA which was replaced by modern ( for the time ) facilities
and the third floor with its racquetball courts was added in the 1980's. A major addition and remodeling began in 2007 and was completed in 2011. The details are chronicled below.
